Depression Q&A

What is depression?

Depression is a mental health disorder that brings down your mood and causes symptoms that negatively affect your thoughts, feelings, and behaviors.

Your depression may range from mild to severe but don’t expect mild symptoms to improve. Without treatment, depression can last months or years and progressively worsen. For some, depression enters a downward spiral leading to suicide.

Treatment from the team at Spero Psychiatry and Counseling can restore your balance and improve your mood.

Are there different types of depression?

You can develop several types of depression. Four of the most common include:

Major depressive disorder (MDD)

MDD causes symptoms most of the time for two weeks or longer. Postpartum depression and seasonal affective disorder are subtypes of MDD.

Persistent depressive disorder (dysthymia)

Dysthymia causes less severe symptoms than MDD but your symptoms last at least two years.

Disruptive mood dysregulation disorder (DMDD)

DMDD affects children, causing nearly-constant irritability, anger, and frequent outbursts.

Premenstrual dysphoric disorder (PDD)

Women with PDD have severe emotional and physical symptoms the week before menstruation.

What are the symptoms of depression?

Depression steals your energy and destroys your ability to enjoy life. If you’re depressed, you experience several of the following symptoms:

  • Feeling worthless and hopeless
  • Losing interest in favorite activities
  • Losing or gaining weight
  • Overeating or eating too little
  • Oversleeping or developing insomnia
  • Having constant fatigue
  • Struggling to concentrate or make decisions
  • Having aimless, repetitive, or slow movements
  • Thinking about death or suicide (suicidal ideation)

If you’re thinking about suicide, call 988 immediately to talk with someone who can help.

It’s time to seek help at Spero Psychiatry and Counseling when your symptoms last two weeks or longer.

How is depression treated?

After your provider learns about your symptoms, reviews your medical history, and completes a psychiatric evaluation, they develop a treatment plan that may include medication and/or talk therapy.

You may need antidepressants for moderate to severe depression. Many people overcome depression with therapy that helps them deal with triggering events, change negative thoughts, and cope with their challenges.

If your depression doesn’t improve, your provider may refer you to a trusted specialist to receive one of two advanced therapies: ketamine infusions and transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS). Both therapies often produce rapid improvement in depression.
